Smart Locks and Gateways: From Definition to Production
Product work on smart locks, keypad accessories and gateways at a Xiaomi ecosystem startup, through design, development and pilot production.
Context
Hotels and apartments needed access and connectivity products that balanced usability, installation constraints, hardware costs and maintenance.
My responsibility
As hardware product manager, I worked on market research, features, component selection, manufacturing partners and coordination across hardware, mechanical and software development.
The work
I led a keypad accessory from initial definition, worked on smart-lock iterations and used product redefinition and bill-of-materials analysis to improve a second-generation gateway.
Results
The keypad accessory I led received a Red Dot Award and a 2017 Successful Design Award. The second-generation gateway cost 50% less than its predecessor; this comparison applies to those two product generations.
